The fact that so many people are outraged and disturbed by the "Man Down" video at least gets us listening and talking, and that is a step in the right direction. Indeed!

Thankfully, I had the opportunity to hear the song before I saw the video. I believe that that made a difference in my response. Because I'm a reader more than I am a viewer, I got it...immediately...and understood the impetus. This wasn't some random act of violence. There was clearly a context. Moreover, I had a better understanding of the possible intention of the author/artist. While Rihanna expressed remorse in the song, I don't believe she was trying to solve or "explain away" her feelings of inescapability or regret for having shot a rapist. I think she cleverly put that out there for a thoughtful and engaging response, and at minimum to shed light on a subject on which many remain largely silent.

I also look forward to the dialogue, and how Rihanna uses her forum as an artist to engage the public on the discussion. It isn't her sole responsibility; however, she can most definitely be a conduit and change agent in this matter.

Thanks for posting!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7900938044383173735.post-33736491830510109932011-06-09T07:44:57.735-07:002011-06-09T07:44:57.735-07:00My hope is that Rhianna's art would speak to h...My hope is that Rhianna's art would speak to her own healing as a battered woman; coming into the realization that neither the Chris Browns or representative rapist deserve to live in her life. Her making public nice over the CB abuse puzzled me. Where are her mama'nem?
